Best 2017 Solar Eclipse Pictures from Our Readers

//

We've curated a selection of some of the best eclipse images our readers submitted to our online gallery.

It’s been 99 years since a total solar eclipse last crossed the United States from coast to coast. Almost a century ago, there wasn’t that much observing gear available to immortalize the event, so this time we counted with Sky & Telescope’s community to take some amazing eclipse pictures! We have been encouraging all of you to send us your images for a while now, and we are happy to be seeing some impressive shots. We are putting some of our favorite submissions together in this slideshow so we all can enjoy them. However, all user submitted photos of the eclipse are available in our online gallery.

We are enjoying the variety of shots we are receiving. Among our favorite images, there are some great views of the Sun’s corona, impressive captures of Baily's beads, a nice view of sunspots as the Sun hides behind the Moon, and even a beautiful diamond ring. Submitters also used a wide variety of observing gear, as we are seeing images taken with all sorts of equipment, from smartphone cameras to advanced camera and telescope set-ups.

The eclipse traveled across the U.S. casting its shadow over 14 states along the path of totality. We are receiving images from many of those states and also from places that only witnessed partial views of the eclipse.

Great photos are still coming in, and we will be updating this slideshow as they continue to do so over the following days. Check back often for the latest updates!

And, if you took a great image yourself during the eclipse or have a great story to share, please send it to our online gallery. We will be glad to see and hear from you!
