Wayne Rooney has been 'badly treated claims Rio Ferdinand

The England skipper came under fire after drinking late at a hotel and publicly apologised before calling his treatement by the media a 'disgrace'

Wayne Rooney has been 'badly treated by the media,' according to former Manchester Unitedteammate Rio Ferdinand.

The England skipper was caught drinking late at a hotel after a Three Lions game and was forced into a public apology.
And Ferdinand believes Rooney has received a raw deal due to the likelihood that he knew he would not be involved in the Spain friendly just days later.
"I think that Rooney has been badly treated by the media in this country on this episode," Ferdinand said as part of BT Sport 's Champions League panel.

"It seems like he knew he wasn't involved in the game on Tuesday [against Spain], so you're free from the responsibilities of preparing for a game.
"If he chose to go out and have a few drinks in the hotel - he wasn't out at a nightclub - then he would see that as a place of security.
"But obviously in today's world with all these camera phones he was put out there in the public domain and now he's been shot down.
"If he was there to play on Tuesday, I'd be looking at it differently. He'd be in the wrong 100 per cent, but because he wasn't in the squad, it's up to you what you do in your spare time."
