Manchester City's Premier League title bid has taken a big blow, as star midfielder Kevin De Bruyne suffered a hamstring injury on Saturday in the Premier League match against Swansea City.
The club's official Twitter account confirmed his late substitution came as a result of a knock:
The Belgium international enjoyed a fantastic first season with the Citizens, making an immediate impact after completing a summer move from VfL Wolfsburg in 2015.
De Bruyne slotted into City's midfield almost seamlessly and gave the side another major creative boost, quickly becoming one of the team's most productive players. Capable of creating for himself and others, he combined well with fellow summer acquisition Raheem Sterling and turned the team into title favourites.
A knee injury halted his impressive form in January, and unsurprisingly, City's form deteriorated, leading to a battle for a top-four Premier League finish that lasted until the final day of the season. The dip in form highlights how important the Belgian is to the team, and this latest injury is a major blow.
With the likes of Sterling, David Silva and Ilkay Gundogan also roaming midfield, the Citizens still boast impressive firepower and tons of creativity, so manager Pep Guardiola should feel good about his team's chances of contending for silverware.
De Bruyne is a special talent, however, and City will be a worse team while he recovers.
